HiveIQ Double Deep + Medium Kit
The HiveIQ Double Deep + Medium Kit gives you everything to run a full Langstroth-compatible colony in a high-density EPS insulated hive — except frames. If you need frames, we have both deep and medium Langstroth frames sold separately. Add them to your cart before you check out.
What's Included
- 2 x 9-Frame Full Depth Beehive Bodies (deep boxes)
- 1 x 9-Frame Medium Beehive Body
- 1 x 9-Frame Bottom Board — includes 2 NFC tags, stamped floor vent, three-stage hive entrance, and blanking plate (covers space for optional pollen trap)
- 1 x 9-Frame Top Cover with yellow metal roof
- 1 x Metal Queen Excluder
- 1 x Varroa / Winter Board
- 1 x Instruction Manual
Frames not included. Each box holds 9 standard Langstroth frames. Outside dimensions match a 10-frame Langstroth hive — deep frames fit the deep boxes, medium frames fit the medium box.
Feeding recommendation: We recommend internal frame feeders for HiveIQ boxes rather than top feeders or entrance feeders. The insulated design makes frame feeders the most compatible option — they sit inside the box without disrupting the thermal seal. Use the Deep Internal Frame Feeder in the deep boxes and the Medium Internal Frame Feeder in the medium box. Each replaces one or two frames depending on the size you choose.
Why an Insulated Hive
Standard wood hives make bees do a lot of extra work. In summer, the colony fans constantly to keep the brood nest cool. In winter, they burn through stores keeping the cluster warm. EPS insulation cuts that workload significantly. We've seen better winter survival, faster spring buildup, and stronger foraging in insulated setups compared to our cypress hives — it's not subtle. The HiveIQ material has roughly 6x the insulation value of standard wood, and the interlocking box design eliminates the drafts and gaps that wood hives develop over time.
The NFC tags in the bottom board connect to the HiveIQ monitoring system, letting you track weight, temperature, and hive activity without opening the hive. That's genuinely useful data, especially through winter.
Assembly
Plan on 45–60 minutes for the full kit. The boxes use mortise and tenon joints — they fit together cleanly and lock solid with exterior wood glue (not included, any weatherproof PVA or polyurethane glue works). The bottom board and lid attach with the included screws using a standard screwdriver or cordless drill. One additional step: apply a bead of silicone between the metal roof and the foam lid to prevent movement and reduce thermal expansion gaps. The boxes can be painted with water-based latex paint for a custom look or UV protection — just avoid oil-based paints, which can damage EPS. The assembly is straightforward — no cutting required.
